10 Reasons to Become a False Creek Yacht Club Member

1. Camaraderie We are the small, fun, friendly, relaxed casual club where we’ll make you feel welcome!

2. We’re Surprisingly Affordable! From membership fees and dues to moorage, food, and social beverages, you can’t beat the FCYC for member value, whether you’re a boater, love watersports, or just enjoy being by the water. Moorage rates are some of the lowest in the Lower Mainland.

3. Location, location. Location.
Minutes from English Bay, minutes from Downtown and the Granville Island Shops, and a great place to see the fireworks, right from your boat or from the award-winning clubhouse.

4. Reasonable wait list for moorage boats under 30’ often get moorage within 6 months, while larger boats may take 2-3 years, however we have a very active sublease program with members who are gone on long-term cruising, and abundant winter moorage options at our Bowen Island outstation. Talk to us!

5. Unique Outstation Program. Some yacht clubs have expensive and underutilized private outstations which require members to spend their boating time actually maintaining the outstations. We make use of existing marina facilities to recreate the outstation experience without the cost and sweat, and have 10 along the coast.

image

6. Active Cruising Calendar with everything from pub crawls, wine-tastings, foodie cruises, hiking or golf cruises to anchoring/stern-tying cruises in more remote areas. Members consistently tell us that they’ve learned more about boating on a False Creek Yacht Club cruise than they ever expected (even those with very large boats who belong to other yacht clubs). Happy Hour daily is a given on an FCYC Cruise.

7. Active Clubhouse with award-winning food and bar service at great prices and the best deck in Vancouver. We have a variety of events year-round, so its easy to make friends who share your interests.

image

8. Unlimited SUP/Kayak Use provides a great way to get out on the waters of False Creek and English Bay if you’re not a boat owner, and you’ll meet others who share your interest. This is a huge value!

9. Learn-to-Sail Option on the 26 foot FolkBoat is cost-effectie and fun! Once you “know the ropes”, you can even take the FolkBoat out cruising.

10. Member Discount Programs can offset for your membership fees if you’re an active boater or even if you just love to ski!

Which level of membership is right for you?

Active Membership

Image

I own a boat or I’m thinking about buying a boat, and I WANT moorage

Active membership best for you because it immediately locks in your seniority on the moorage wait list. It’s our premier membership tier and affords all privileges of every membership level, plus voting rights, the opportunity to hold a board position, access to all outstations, and an opportunity for full time moorage or sublease moorage in our False Creek Marina and Bowen Outstation.

Permanent moorage is assigned as it becomes available and is determined via seniority and boat size. FCYC has moorage with a variable wait list depending on size of the boat. Typically boats in the 28-35’ range have been accommodated fairly quickly, 1-3 years is the standard expectation with some larger sizes taking a bit longer.
Sublease moorage is often overlooked as an option but is often available within a short timeframe as our cruisers love to be away for extended cruising periods. Ask for details and availability.

Membership pays for itself, with over $2000 of benefits every year + moorage savings!

✓ Take advantage of the 20% discount on food and beverages at the Clubhouse (you’re going to eat out anyway, right?),

✓ You may never pay marina fees again! Use the Bowen Island outstation year-round, receive up to a $500 moorage credit at 10 marinas along the coast and take advantage of a big list of reciprocals,

✓ No cover charges at club dance parties and more

✓ Significant savings on typical moorage rates in the Vancouver area (up to $8/ft/mo), once you’re assigned moorage.

NOTE: As with all yacht clubs in the Vancouver area, a wait list is established and is based on seniority and overall dimensions of the craft. Guaranteed promises of moorage cannot be made; rather reliance on history suggests that movement through the wait lists is possible. In all instances, a conversation about the wait list with the existing Rear Commodore Marina is advised, given that he/she is most familiar with current movement and opportunities.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I become a member?

  • Complete and submit this application including your credit card data for the initiation fee to lock in your seniority date & time. This is critical for Active members seeking moorage.
  • The member application approval process includes an initial phone call with our Club Manager to answer any questions and ensure that the FCYC is a good fit for you, followed by a friendly get-together with one or more members to ensure you’re a good fit for us. That way, there are a couple of friendly faces you’ll already know when you join!
  • After officially being approved by the Board, you will receive your prorated invoice for annual membership costs along with parking passes and an access fob to the clubhouse.
  • Once you’re a member, we’ll make you feel welcome, with an official Orientation Evening where you’ll meet other new and long-time members. We’ll ask you to complete a profile with some information about yourself and your interests for the Club Roster, so that you can connect with other members who enjoy the same activities you do.

When can I access the marina and clubhouse?

  • Moorage members have 24-hour access to the marina.
  • Cruising and Social Members who wish to use the kayaks, SUPs or Folkboat may ask the Wharfinger for assistance or may be eligible for fob access.
  • The Clubhouse is open to all members daily between 11:00AM - 4:30PM for casual meetings, R&R on the deck, or just to enjoy a cup of coffee. Check with the office first to ensure it is not booked for an external event.

How long have you been around for?

  • Since 1981, when a small group of boaters at a marina near the old Connaught Bridge (replaced by the current Cambie Street Bridge) decided to form a Yacht Club that would become the Star of False Creek. The idea was for a new Club near the city heart which, besides traditional boating activities, would offer an exciting social and recreational environment unique in the Downtown/False Creek core. That marina disappeared as part of the Expo 86 development, the club moved to its current location, and the Clubhouse opened in December 1989. Read more about our history here

Do you own your marina?

  • As of 2020, the Club has three moorage leases:
  • Lot 143 is a Provincial lease which covers 34 berths (C-E) of the marina operation and will be up for renewal in April 2051.
  • Lot 161 is a Provincial lease which covers 9 berths (F-G) of the marina operation and will be up for renewal November 20, 2051.
  • The Concord Pacific Group Inc. lease covers 66 berths of the marina operation and is currently renewed yearly.

What is an assessment?

  • The assessment is a pre-paid credit for food and drinks in the lounge, billed at the beginning of the membership year (April 1st).
  • There is a minimum spend of a quarter of your assessment each quarter, otherwise it will be reclaimed by the club. As long as you come for dinner and drinks once or twice a quarter, you’ll be all set. Of course, with such an active clubhouse we’d like to see you a lot more often!
